CHOICES Follow-Up for 5.6.11
The CHOICES training at ACE on 5.6.11 was very informative and provided much needed information for implementing the program with adult education students. As you have returned to your programs and begun using CHOICES with your students please share one thing that you have found to be the most beneficial for adult educationi students.

1. You require your students to use a variety of sources for their research projects...and they cite blogs, podcasts, and interviews they've conducted via Skype.
2. Your students work on collaborative projects...with students in Australia.
3. You give weekly class updates to parents...via your blog.
4. Your students participate in class...by tweeting their questions and comments.
5. You ask your students to study and create reports on a controversial topic...and you grade their video submissions.
6. You prepare substitutes with detailed directions...via Podcasts.
7. You ask your students to do a character/historical person study...and they create mock social media profiles of their character.
8. Your students create a study guide...working together on a group wiki.
9. You share lesson plans with your teacher friends...from around the globe.
10. Your classroom budget is tight...but it doesn't matter because there are so many free resources on the web you can use.
11. You realize the importance of professional development...and you read blogs, join online communities, and tweet for self development.
12. You take your students on a field trip to the Great Wall of China...and never leave your classroom.
13. Your students share stories of their summer vacation...through an online photo repository.
14. You visit the Louvre with your students...and don't spend a dime.

Updated Resources Available for Inmates Headed Back to School
OVAE just updated its planning guide, Back to School: A Planning Guide to Continuing Your Education After Prison, a planning guide by the John Jay College of Criminal Justice Prisoner Reentry Institute, which OVAE funded. This update reflects the most recent information on federal student financial aid for inmates headed for release. Topics range from setting personal educational goals and committing to a long-term education development plan to finding, accessing, and paying for an education program. Ninety-four percent of adult male inmates approaching release who were interviewed for a recent national evaluation identified education as a personal re-entry need. Free copies of the guide are available in limited quantities from EDPubs by requesting item number ED005088P.

WOW!
Hey Region 1!
Today has been a great day. I have been in Vero Beach at a meeting with the Professional Development Standing Committee and it was an extremely productive day. I am very excited about the on-line adult education professional development that we are developing. More to come about that.
The best part of the day was when I got back to the hotel and checked our BLOG. The folks that attended the GED Writing workshop with Betty Harrison were given a follow-up assignment and have exceeded my expectations. Woo Hoo!!! As I have told you all before our BLOG can be a wonderful tool in sharing ideas and information.
Little by little we are getting there. :)

GED Writing Support of a Series
Okay all of you writers out there...
Here is your assignment which is a follow-up to our wonderful workshop presented by Betty Harrison on April 8, 2010.
1. List three of the "Rules" for comma usage that Betty shared with us.
2. Give an example of a lesson that you have used with your students.
Be sure to sign your name at the end of the Blog so I will have documentation.
