CHOICES Follow-Up for 3.3.11

The CHOICES training at TCC on 2.25.11 was very informative and provided much needed information for implementing the program with adult education students. As you have returned to your programs and begun using CHOICES with your students please share one thing that you have found to be the most beneficial for adult educationi students.

    Having worked in a rural community for decades, I have noticed many strengths that have come from its peoples mentalities. I have found many individuals to be hard working, optimistic, energetic, and goal focused. However, being part of a rural community does have its down-side. Many of my students do not realize the extensity of the world around them, specifically relating to the work force. Typically those living in this community have only a dozen or so job opportunities available. For generations, these people have lived under the perception that these few jobs were all that could be available to them. Now, with Florida Choices, my students can use its tools and search its databases and learn of thousands of jobs all across the nation. They are able to find jobs that better suit their skills and are more compatible with their interests, making them have brighter hopes for their future employment.

    I work with young people who don't have any idea what they want in life.They work with Florida Choices and find jobs they would enjoy doing,so they can set goals. Some students like to work with the interest profiler,because it shows the careers they will enjoy doing. The careers section shows what a person in that career does,the working conditions, the physical demands, work to be done,traveling and skills.

    I am looking forward to our Fall registration. I believe Florida Choices will be a terrific opportunity for prospective students to explore their interests and maybe match one of their interests with one of our programs. The amount of information provided by Florida Choices on occupations is amazing. It is a terrific tool for anybody, no matter what age, to explore their career options.
